do the jws still emphasize following up on "not at homes":.

making "every effort" (or any effort at all) to contact all persons in their "territory"?.

this last month, april, was supposed to be a time of extra effort on their part.

This last month, April, was supposed to be a time of extra effort on their part. We did have somebody call here while neither of us was at home, and they did leave a pamphlet under the door - but nobody was back to follow up. (Not that I am complaining!)

Maybe they are just content these days to be able to "count the time", regardless of whether or not they actually get to speak to anybody?

Then again, maybe they knew they were in for a rough time if they did meet somebody (my wife in particular), and were glad to have any excuse to be able to just hit and run!

The WTS has often cited reference works of dubious accuracy, in order to "support" their doctrines.

Another work the WTS turned to early in its existence was Benjamin Wilson's Emphatic Diaglott:

- Its translation of certain words in the Koine Greek language was much to C.T. Russell's liking!

However, informed scholars generally gave it a bad review.

Also, Russell was much entranced with the pseudo-science of Pyramidolgy. While the WTS may or not have directly quoted from Professor Charles Smyth's The Great Pyramid - Its Secrets and Mysteries Revealed, Smyth's ideas influenced WTS doctrine up until 1927.

Thanks for that.

When I first began reading the WTS propaganda, I do recall much reference being made to Hislop's The two Babylons. The way in which it was referred to , you got the impression that this work was the final authority on just about anything and everything. All opinions offered were actually indisputable facts - to be contested by idiots only!

In fact, as you have demonstrated here, Alexander Hislop belongs to the lunatic fringe every bit as much as C.T. Russell, J.F. Rutherford and F.W. Franz. What a remarkable achievement!

Is this a forum for JW issues or a poorly designed political and celebrity site?

it appears to me that even in the few months that i have been here there is less and less emphasis on jehovah's witnesses and anything remotely related to jws and more very poor posts about politics, foreign affairs and celebrities.

i can't omit the juvenile sex ones, which i find lacking in erotic nature.

it seems the 6th grade boys are meeting in the locker room.. the posts that involve jws have a very different tone from the drivel posted on others.

I have no doubts whatsoever about the importance of academic qualifications, having acutely felt the lack thereof in my own field - i.e. electrical engineering.

(Unfortunately, most of my knowledge and expertise has been picked up by experience, in which Murphy's Law No.7 played a major role: "Experience gained is in direct proportion to the amount of equipment destroyed!")

I am, though, puzzled by those who seem to equate "dumbing down" with humility. It seems to me much like trying to class religion and ethics as the same thing.

At different times, I have been privileged to work with some very highly qualified persons. Despite their impressive qualifications in electrical engineering, these individuals did not attempt to overawe the rest of us by flaunting their academic achievements at every opportunity. Rather, they commanded great respect by both being the persons that they were, and by the excellent quality of the work that they turned out.

Conversely, the only engineer that ever tried to bully the rest of us with his (supposed!) status turned out to in actual fact be rather ordinary - both in qualifications and ability. (Not to mention being a right #$%& as a person!).

None of this comes as any surprize to the likes of myself:

- just try getting a decent job without a degree!

The best job I could ever find was managing a power station, in the middle of a malarial jungle clearing, in a Third World country (the same position that had sent two previous incumbents mad).

Anyone participating on this site needs to realize that a wide variety of opinions are being offered, on an equally wide variety of topics.

Fair enough, too!

- we received enough censorship while with the JWs, without wanting it imposed here. (Well, I did, anyway).

PS: Just because some on this site are not as good at expressing themselves as others should not deny them their chance to say their piece. You don't have to read everything that is printed here - if a topic is of no interest to you, all you have to do is move on to another. I do it regularly!

funny how things work.

i had just posted a sarcastic question on pc's thread about last nights call with the six screens folks when the door bell rang.

it was a jw lady and she was by herself.

A lot of "Monkey see - Monkey do" is observable here.

i.e. WT leaders regularly lie about such matters, so the Rank and File have no difficulty in doing the same.

Furthermore, the typical JW is so muddle-headed and ready to swallow anything the WTS says, that many do not even seem to realise that they are lying.

Talk about a dysfunctional mob - it now scares me to think that I, too, was once caught up in all this!

Is this normal witness behavior?

i quit my bible study a couple days ago after taking a month or two to work up the guts.

have been getting harassing emails/phone calls blah blah blah.

but i got an email today telling me that an unbelieving spouse can be "sanctified" by his believing mate.

They tried this same trick with my father, but he, too, knew a bit about the bible - from having actually read the thing, NOT the Watchtower!.

He pointed out that one David had committed more than a few gross sins in his time - particularly in regard to a woman named Bathsheeba. Yet David remained, to quote, "The apple of the Lord's eye."

My father reckoned that if David could get away with that, then God was not going to be too hard on our family if he failed to attend the meetings at the Kingdom Hall!

Fifteen years later, somebody likewise threatened my sister with the responsibilty of the lives of her children, after she declined the invitation to attend a special talk at the Kingdom Hall.

My sister, always being one to quickly spot manipulation, promptly told this person what to do!

Much has been said about how religion (even the so-called "Main Stream" ones) uses fear to control people. In my view, the JWs more often resort to using guilt to manipulate people:

- Guilt is more insidious than outright, naked fear; and can easily be hidden behind the seemingly innocent concern for other people's welfare.

- And of what greater concern could there be than the welfare of ones own family?

So yes, in playing the "responsibilty for the lives of your husband / family" card, this lot are - once again - revealing their true colors.
